It’s Bigger On The Inside…

Tonight I came across the Scottish Falsettos of Puppet Theatre, a rather absurd duo of sock puppets– Think The Muppet Show meets Pinky and The Brain meets Monty Python. One of them, Lefty, comes across as that frustrated amateur filmmaker who stage some rather lame recreations of popular movies or UK TV shows. Righty gets dragged into them as a willing if not exactly enthused participant. Their endeavors are particularly hilarious given that they have to cope with: a) having the barest (and lamest) of props; b) not having any hands to use the props with; c) having only two of them act out multiple roles; and d) being, well, socks.

Their production of Reservoir Dogs is great. My personal favorite, however, is Darleks Vs. The Scottish Falsettos, where Lefty mounts a spirited production of Doctor Who. Righty fights him every inch of the way, from decrying the obviously fake props (“Suspension of disbelief!” Lefty keeps protesting) to crooning Hello Dalek.

And then there is the inevitable spoof of Torchwood, fittingly titled Torchwool. Brilliant, brilliant stuff.

Two Songs For One Day

Sunday, May 18, 2008

Birthdays are a strange thing. When you’re a kid, you can’t wait for it to come, and with it, the promise of all sorts of gifts and goodies. But then you get older, and it becomes less and less a magical, special occasion.

Until one morning you get out of bed, realize it’s that time of the year, and then– nothing.

This was not one of those years. For starters, how can you not feel like the damn luckiest mook on earth when your partner set the alarm on his phone to this song to start the day off?

Later that evening, we had dinner with some friends, and then went on to the Orpheum, where Crowded House was winding up the last leg of their tour. Riley made good use of his awesome new camera’s video feature to capture this. It’s one of my favorite songs, and the one that comes to mind every time Riley’s on the road.
